American Depository Receipts (or ADRs) are shares that trade in the US market, but represent a specified number of shares in a foreign company.

This allows companies from smaller markets to expose themselves to the larger US market.

They can be traded much the same as any US stocks, in US dollars, following US settlement conventions. Take care though, as they often trade at different prices to their home market.
